The Affects of Inflectional and Derivational Morphology in Bengali Phonology and its Implications in Speech Technology

چکیده
Development of a text-to-speech synthesizer in a language calls for either a pronouncing dictionary or a grapheme-to-phoneme (G2P) converter. For agglutinative and morphologically rich languages it is not possible to build an exhaustive pronouncing dictionary. Moreover, since phonology is overtly dependent on morphological structures, morphological analysis becomes important even for building an accurate G2P converter. In this paper we discuss the case of Bengali phonology, which is influenced by its derivational and inflectional morphologies to a large extent. We describe the different phenomena and show that although inflectional morphology seems to be absolutely necessary for a reasonably good G2P converter, derivational morphology is computationally intensive and therefore, it might be overkill for the G2P converter. Rather, simple heuristics coupled with a list of common exceptions can improve the accuracy of the G2P.

Sub-optimal Paradigms in Yiddish
It is well known that the phonological form of a word can depend on its morphological structure. In serial approaches, this follows naturally from the fact that words have derivational histories: morphologically complex words undergo successive levels of phonology as they are constructed. A crucial distinction is typically made, however, between derivational and inflectional morphology. Whereas...

متن کاملMorphological spelling in spite of phonological deficits: Evidence from children with dyslexia and Otitis Media
The present study examines whether literacy or phonological impairment affects use of morphological spelling constancy; the principle that morphemes are spelled consistently across words. Children with dyslexia or otitis media (OM) were compared to chronologicalage matched children and reading-ability matched children. Monomorphemic and polymorphemic nonwords were spelled in a sentence completi...
متن کاملA Language-independent Approach to Extracting Derivational Relations from an Inflectional Lexicon
In this paper, we describe and evaluate an unsupervised method for acquiring pairs of lexical entries belonging to the same morphological family, i.e., derivationally related words, starting from a purely inflectional lexicon. Our approach relies on transformation rules that relate lexical entries with the one another, and which are automatically extracted from the inflected lexicon based on su...
متن کاملA Two-level Morphological Analyser and Generator for Irish using Finite-State Transducers
Computational morphology is an important part of natural language processing. Finite-state techniques have been applied successfully in computational phonology and morphology to many of the world’s major languages. Celtic languages such as Modern Irish present challenging morphological features that to date have not been addressed using finite-state technology. This paper presents a finite-stat...
